Any fool can make something complicated. It takes a genius to make it simple." - Woody Guthrie

Friday flowers ...

Better late than never, these gorgeous flowers are from the scabiosa family.  Just how does nature do it?  My particular favourite is the stellata, it is just so other worldly.  I spent a fabulous Friday with a work colleague, our rainy stroll through the town was topped off with a knickerbocker glory at Pelosi which has been in Ramsgate since 1945.  I do hope whoever takes it over will preserve the integrity of this wonderful 1960s style ice cream parlour, which has become part of our family history too.

Looks like it is going to be a 'dry' Saturday after all, despite rain being forecast, so a trip to What a Vintage Carry On might be on the cards.

Getting your five a day ...

How to transform courgettes into something yummy.  Unfortunately, I was too impatient to line the tin.  My cake was greeted with "don't put that on your blog Mum, one slice might look rustic but the whole cake implies shoddy baking".  Tastes good though.  If you have a glut of courgettes and willing to line a baking tin, you can find the recipe here.  So far today my raspberry frozen yoghurt has been turned down and my fresh pea risotto was described as 'cheesy'.  I am beginning to get a complex.

A day of firsts ...

My first home-made ice-cream; strawberries and cream.  It was absolutely gorgeous, if but quick to melt in this heat.  Which was no bother, because I wolfed it down in minutes.  Sorry it does contain sugar but at least the recipe was simple, fresh and additive free.  I am sure my little ice-cream maker is going to be put to good use in this weather.

The other first was my food-bank volunteering session at the local Asda, handing out leaflets and asking people to donate whatever they could afford.  Loved every minute of it, some people were very generous and others made the choice not to donate.  It's a free world and giving is not compulsory.  A lot of people have their own troubles and concerns but you could see the positive boost a donation gave people, however big or small.  Hats off to them all because I know it can't be easy especially when they have families to feed.

Right then I am off to do some salad building.
Have a wonderful weekend. xxx
